Water hyacinth threatens Ramsar wetland
Sankhya Sagar, an artificial lake in Shivpuri district, was reported to be almost entirely covered by invasive water hyacinth. The 248-hectare lake had been designated a Ramsar wetland in July 2022 and supports the ecological balance of Madhav National Park.
The spread of the invasive plant threatened open water, aquatic biodiversity and the wetland’s wider ecological functions. The report raised concerns about management of a newly recognised site of international importance.
