‘Village of widows’: how Madhya Pradesh devastated an Adivasi community
Families removed from villages inside Madhav National Park lost access to forests, farming and other sources of livelihood. Many men subsequently took dangerous work in stone quarries, where silicosis and tuberculosis caused numerous deaths and left a settlement known locally as the “village of widows”.
The report centres the experiences of women such as Phoolvati and Anandi Sahariya, describing widowhood, inadequate pensions, food insecurity and barren replacement land. Residents said repeated applications to officials had not delivered the rehabilitation promised when they were displaced.
