Half of returning migrants unemployed
A survey of 1,500 migrant workers who returned to Madhya Pradesh from Maharashtra during the COVID-19 lockdown found that 56.5% were unemployed. Many of those who had found work were earning less than before, while 67% said their families needed urgent relief.
The study, undertaken with Zenith, also found that 90% had not received promised monetary assistance. It documented declining incomes, disguised unemployment and strong demand for local work, with more than half of respondents saying they wanted to settle in Madhya Pradesh.
