Lawyers demand end to manual scavenging
On Constitution Day, lawyers and activists in Shivpuri carried containers of human excreta to a government office to protest the continued practice of manual scavenging. They demanded equal rights for sanitation workers, an end to hazardous cleaning and meaningful rehabilitation.
Abhay Jain argued that providing protective equipment was not enough. The underlying practice had to end through safer sanitation infrastructure, including the closure of open drains and construction of septic systems. District officials directed civic agencies to take action.
